Food security: Agriculturist advocates modern fish farming techniques

Mrs Hawa Salifu, Chief Executive Officer of Hansata Integrated Farm Enterprise, Nasarawa has advised fish farmers to adopt modern fish farming techniques to ensure food security and maximise profit.
Salifu gave this advice on Friday in Lafia, at the end of three days training on modern fish farming techniques and value chains, organised for new and existing farmers in Nasarawa State.
According to her, it becomes imperative for fish farmers to acquaint themselves with new fish farming smart approaches to be able to harness the potentials in the sector.
Salifu listed the fish farming potentials to include job creation, wealth creation, food security, improved standard of living among others.
She said the essence of the training was to change the narrative through use of modern techniques to improve aqua-cultural sector, and exposure of farmers to fish farming value chain.
“The participants are trained in the area of modern farming techniques in both practical and theoretical fish methods across value chains using smart approaches.
“They are now empowered with the right skills and knowledge that will help them use available resources to start cost effective farms.
“The resources will further enable them to be able to harness potentials in fish farming,’’ Salifu said.
Also speaking, Umaru Mohammed, the state chairman, Fisheries Cooperative Federation Ltd, while commending the organisers, urged beneficiaries to utilise knowledge gained from the training to establish farms.
Two participants who spoke, Rhoda Chube and Ife Alo, thanked the organisers for giving them the opportunity to be trained.
They also promised to make judicious use of the training by venturing into fish farming.
United States Agency for International Development in collaboration with Hansata Integrated Farm Enterprise trained 80 youths and women at the occasion. (NAN)
