Forum recommends visionary leadership from family level for transformation of Nigeria

In view of the current social and economic crisis in the country, it has been observed that the country requires visionary leadership to help steer its affairs from the current challenges.

This was the recommendation made by participants in a Communique issued at the end of Akinjide Adeosun Foundation (AAF) Leadership Colloquium and Awards on Tuesday in Lagos.

The forum examined the importance of visionary leadership as a vital and essential prerequisite for transforming Nigeria from its present low state to prosperity and greatness within the comity of nations.

It observed the need to redefine “Leadership” as a process that transcends the office of the president, governor or national assembly, but that which involves every citizen working to build a new nation.

It also observed that many Nigerians were vision bound but only few were willing to step forwards to lead.

According to the communique, Nigerians should imbibe a mindset of self leadership and develop a common commitment towards rebuilding the nation, beginning from the family level.

“This is because visionary leadership is key to national development; it is a resolve by individuals to take responsibility to lead and develop other people’s capabilities for the interest of the family, community and the nation at large.

“Visionary leadership is about an individual who sees the potential of how the world should exist and then takes steps to get there.

“It has to do with the ability of individuals or a group of people to see the potential for change combined with the ability to lead others,” the communique said.

Other recommendations and resolutions reached by participants in the communique include the need to sustain the nation’s democracy as contained in the constitution.

“Leaders should henceforth emerge by merit and not on the condition of their tribe, sex, or religion.

“The process that turns up people for leadership must work.

“To this end, a major shift and mindset would be required to re-order our value system both at the levels of the family, community and governments.

“The youths must be encouraged to take active part in government.

“Leadership training must be included in Nigeria’s secondary school curriculum.”

It was also recommended that retired leaders in the private sector must rise to take charge of the public service.

The event also marked the 53rd birthday of the AAF Founder, Mr Akinjide Adeosun.

The AAF 2021 Visionary Leadership Award was conferred on Dr Kehinde Nwani, the Chief Executive Officer, Meadow Hall Group and Chief Innocent Chukwuma, the Chief Executive Officer, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing company, for their visionary business acumen.
