Gov. Sule advocates improved remuneration for journalists

Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has tasked media owners in Nigeria on improved remuneration of their workers as motivation for better performance.

Sule gave the charge during an interactive session with veterans and practicing journalists on Monday in Lafia as part activities to mark the 2021 Press Week of the  Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nasarawa State Council.

He described the poor remuneration of media workers in Nigeria as worrisome, hence the  call for better welfare package.

“It is very worrisome if you ask to know what most of this big media houses are paying their workers, you will find out that some of them are not on salary.

“If media houses cannot pay their staff well, how do you want them to cope when their remuneration is not encouraging, do you want them to become beggars?” he queried.

The governor said that improved remuneration by media owners would encourage journalists to perform better and uphold professional ethics of balanced reportage rather than doing the bidding of newsmakers.

The interactive session availed the practicing journalist an opportunity to learn from the experiences of the veterans and to also address some contemporary challenges in journalism practice.
