The Nasarawa State Government has awarded a contract for the renovation of the Lafia Township Stadium to Reform Sports West Africa Ltd., an Abuja-based company.
Representatives of the state government and the contractor signed the agreement for the renovation of the stadium at a brief ceremony on Tuesday in Lafia.
Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Lucky Yargwa, who
represented the state government, said that the Gov. Abdullahi Sule administration would transform the facility to international standards.
Yargwa, who said the contract for the renovation of the facility was awarded to meet best practices, said that the firm would start work immediately..
Yargwa, who declined to state monetary details and the renovation costs involved, said that parts of the contract included the fixing of new astroturf on the football pitch, construction of athletics tartan track, and a hockey pitch.
“Sports and youth development are some of the mainstays of governor Sule’s administration and the governor has made it categorically clear that he would revamp the sector to meet best practices.
“We are a state blessed with so many sports enthusiasts, and we can’t afford to fail them but to make facilities readily available to them to harness their potentials.
“Today, you can see one of those pieces of evidence. We are fixing a new astroturf on the soccer field; we will construct world-class tartan tracks, and also construct a befitting hockey pitch,” he said.
The commissioner also said that five companies applied for the job, but Reform Sports West Africa Ltd. proved that it would deliver on the job specification and meet the time frame.
“We are glad that this is happening today. The bidding process was rigorous, but at the end, we have a company that can deliver on the job specification,” he said.

Yargwa, who said that three weeks had been agreed on for the turf laying and three months for laying the tartan tracks and hockey pitch, assured the public that the project would be completed within the agreed date.
“Due to exigency, we have agreed with the contractor to finish the job within a short period.
“We have sorted out all the grey areas, and I can assure you that our stadium will be ready for any kind of sporting event in the next couple of weeks.
“This is to enable our sportsmen and women to quickly return to the facilities upon completion,” he said.
Reacting, Mr. Michael Adamu, the chief executive officer of the firm handling the project, said that his company would deliver the job as specified.
He promised to deliver a quality job, adding that the facilities, when completed, would endure a longer life span.(NAN)
