Gunmen abduct varsity don in Nasarawa, demand N20m ransom

Gunmen have abducted Professor Johnson Fatokun, a former head of mathematical sciences department at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi and are demanding N20million ransom for his release.

Prof. Fatokun was said to be on his way from Jos and heading towards Keffi in Nasarawa state when the gunmen ambushed his vehicle at about 9:00pm and forcefully took him to an unknown destination.

One of the travellers, (names witheld) who escaped narrowly from the kidnappers told journalists that the gunmen opened fire on their vehicle from behind when they approached Garaku town in Kokona Local Government Area of the state.

He said the Professor, who was driving decided to increased the level of speed only to meet another group of heavily armed men hence they were left with no option than to stop.

“When we stopped they ordered us into the bush and started speaking Hausa dialect and when I told him I don’t understand Hausa he cocked the gun and would have shot at me but ran out of bullet”, He said.

According to him, when one of the gunmen discovered he ran short of bullets, he brought out knife and wanted to stab him but narrowly escaped and hid himself in a drainage, adding that the kidnappers dressed in police uniform.

While they gunmen advance in search of him, the survivor said the soldier came and engaged the criminal in a gun battle while the armed gang fled into bush with the professor.

“The matter has been reported at the Divisional police station at Garaku where the professor’s car with bullet  holes is currently parked”

Prof. Fatokun is also a one-time Dean, Faculty of Science & Education and Head of Department, Mathematical Sciences & IT, Federal University, Dutsin-Ma and currently the Pioneer Deputy Vice Chancellor, Anchor University, Lagos.
