Unknown gunmen have killed three policemen on duty on the boundary between the Ebonyi State capital, Abakaliki, and Enugu.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening as a traveler, Itumo Ndubuisi, who was traveling into Ebonyi State from Enugu when the incident occurred, said there were heavy gunshots on the boundary that forced motorists and travelers to scamper for safety.

He noted that the gunshots lasted for over 30 minutes, which forced motorists and travelers to flee in all directions for safety.

Itumo, an indigene of Ebonyi State, said he had to go back to Enugu following the incident.

State Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), SP Chris Anyanwu, confirmed the incident.

He said, “Yesterday’s attack by unknown gunmen at Ebonyi/Enugu boundary took place at about 18:08hrs.
‘Three police personnel of ‘Operation Safer Highway’, fatally injured. Later confirmed dead.
“Hoodlums operated in two Sienna vehicles, drove into the check-point, opened fire on the policemen”.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Prof. Benard Odoh, and the Campaign Council (PCO) has said they have uncovered fresh plots to destabilise the campaign of the party’s Senatorial candidate in Ebonyi South, Ifeanyi Eleje by agents of All Progressives Congress (APC)-led- government in the state.

It warned the Ebubeagu security outfit to disengage from anything that has to do with the 2023 general election as directed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, that regional, quasi-security outfits like Ebubeagu have no role to play in the 2023 general election under the Electoral Act 2022 .

A statement by APGA’s Director, Media and Publicity, Charles Otu, said its findings showed that the state government has concluded plans to abduct, torture and remand APGA supporters in police custody and throw some others into the Correctional facilities.

The statement alleged that some other influential stakeholders supporting the Party have already been penciled down for maiming which will land them in the hospitals till after the election.
