IGP meets Benue stakeholders, pledges stronger security to tackle farmer-herder crisis
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has pledged intensified security operations and stronger collaboration with communities to address the persistent security challenges in Benue State, particularly the recurring farmer-herder conflict.
The commitment was made during an official working visit to the state on Friday, according to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu.
During the visit, the IGP met with Governor Hyacinth Alia before holding a high-level strategic engagement with critical stakeholders at the Government House Banquet Hall in Makurdi.
The meeting brought together traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth and women representatives, members of farmers’ associations and other stakeholders to deliberate on measures to improve security and restore lasting peace across the state.
Addressing the gathering, Disu expressed concern over the proliferation of sophisticated firearms, describing it as a major factor driving recurring violence in communities across Benue.
He commended Governor Alia and community leaders for supporting security operations, stressing that sustainable peace can only be achieved through active cooperation between security agencies and local communities.
The IGP urged residents, particularly young people, to promptly report suspicious activities, assuring them that all information provided would be treated with strict confidentiality.
He also pledged intelligence-led policing and closer collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force, other security agencies and local security outfits, emphasising that maintaining law and order is a collective responsibility.
In his remarks, Governor Alia thanked the Inspector-General for undertaking an on-the-ground assessment of the state’s security situation, describing the visit as a demonstration of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to tackling insecurity in Benue.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies, noting that his priority is to ensure residents can live, work and carry out farming activities without fear.
Alia also commended the Commissioner of Police in Benue State, CP Cletus C. Nwadiogbu, for his efforts in combating crime and strengthening police-community relations across the state.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country while upholding professionalism and strengthening public confidence in policing.
