Ikire assassination attempt: Osun APC fingers PDP Chieftain, seeks police probe

By Oludamisi Ojo.
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned Tuesday’s assassination attempt on the party’s candidate in the Osun West Senatorial District, Dr Amidu Tadese, by suspected political thugs loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
According to a statement issued by the Osun State Acting Chairman of the APC, Sooko Tajudeen Lawal in Osogbo on Wednesday, the attack that culminated in the assassination attempt on the APC senatorial candidate by the PDP thugs was callous, wicked, primitive and uncalled for.
It was alleged that the PDP senatorial candidate for the Osun West Senatorial District, Dr Lere Oyewumi, co-ordinated the attack on Tadese and members of his campaign train in Ikire which led to the destruction of many vehicles in the campaign train of the APC candidate with so many of the party’s candidates wounded in the melee.
It would be recalled that Oyewumi, the PDP senatorial candidate for the Osun-West Senatorial District, during the campaign for the last governorship election in the state, had boasted at a meeting with some political thugs in a recorded video that went viral that he would use maximum force to win all the elections in the state.
Lawal hinted that it was strange and unbelievable that Oyewumi could truly act according to his earlier threat to inject violence into politics and politicking in the state.
The state APC Acting Chairman said it was disheartening that a candidate could think that violence is the best option for warming his way into the hearts of the electorates.

Lawal enjoined the Inspector-General of Police to invoke an urgent instruction on the state commissioner of police on the need for him to ensure that politics is being played in Osun State without violence.
He tasked the state commissioner of police to get to the root of the assassination attempt with a view to arresting, investigating and prosecuting the undesirable elements who have been constituting themselves into enemies of peace in the state.
Lawal said. based on the verifiable past threat of Oyewumi to introduce violence into the polity in his constituency, he should be held responsible for the disturbance of peace in Ikire.
The state APC acting chairman enjoined the statutory security agencies to come to the aid of members of his party who are being attacked across the state by the PDP since the inauguration of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration on November 27, 2022.
He said his party, APC, is a law-abiding corporate entity which beliefs in the rules of law which however, should not be taken for an act of cowardice by the government in power which has been terrorising, subjugating and oppressing his members for no just cause.
