The National Union of Road Transport Workers has blamed the proliferation of illegal motor parks and the activities of touts for declining patronage and poor business for commercial transport operators in Bauchi State.
The union said the situation had reduced the number of trips made by drivers daily, affecting their income and creating security concerns for passengers travelling into and out of the state.
Chairman of the Jos Road Taxi Branch of the union in Bauchi metropolis, Armayau Bala, made the remarks on Wednesday while renewing calls for the Bauchi State Government to establish a centralised mega motor park.
According to him, the existing motor park has become too small to meet current transport demands, while the emergence of unauthorised parks across the metropolis has further fragmented passenger traffic.
He said many travellers now patronise parks located on the outskirts of the city, leaving operators at the recognised park with fewer passengers and worsening their economic situation.
Bala argued that a single, centrally managed terminal would strengthen security by ensuring that passengers, vehicles and goods are screened before departure.
“A centralised mega park will improve security because everyone travelling into or out of Bauchi will pass through one location where proper security checks can be carried out. It will also boost commercial activities and promote unity among transport operators,” he said.
The union leader noted that the decline in passenger traffic had made it difficult for many drivers to make enough trips to sustain their livelihoods.
He also disclosed that the union keeps a comprehensive passenger manifest containing travellers’ names, destinations and next-of-kin details to enable swift response in the event of road crashes or other emergencies.
Bala, however, expressed concern that members of the union had yet to benefit from insurance cover after accidents despite making regular insurance payments.
He urged the state government to prioritise the construction of a centralised mega motor park, describing it as a long-term solution to illegal parks, insecurity and the challenges facing transport operators.
He nevertheless commended the Bauchi State Government for improving road infrastructure across the state, saying better roads had enhanced vehicular movement and road transportation.
