Tinubu’s visit not political, Afenifere explains

By Olusegun Olanrewaju
Leaders of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, on Tuesday paid a visit to the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at his Ikoyi home in Lagos.

The news about the visit of the Afenifere chieftains to the former governor of Lagos State, who is believed to be eying the presidential ticket of the APC in 2023, was, however, not political, ThisNigeria learnt yesterday.

Those who visited Tinubu included Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Supo Shonibare, Oba Olaitan Oladipo, and retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Tunji Alapini.

The visit came days after Tinubu returned from a medical trip to the United Kingdom where he underwent knee surgery.

But one of the Afenifere leaders, who was on the entourage, told ThisNigeria that their visit was purely to felicitate with Tinubu on his return from the United Kingdom after undergoing knee surgery.

The Afenifere chieftain, who wished not to be named, said Tinubu had over a period identified with Afenifere at some critical moments.

He said: “It was purely a humane empathy visit. Despite our differences, we do not wish anyone dead. We should exhibit some magnanimity. After all, when Yinka Odumakin died, he came to visit Pa Adebanjo and any event that we have, even when he is not invited, he comes.

“This is not a political visit, and I am sure that even some of his people may want to see it from the political point of view. It is not an endorsement visit. There is even flight in the north that our visit was to endorse him, but we have not moved from our political point of views.”

Recall that the last time Tinubu and Adebanjo met was in April when the former Afenifere spokesman, Yinka Odumakin, died.

Adebanjo had openly criticised Tinubu for his relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari and his role as a chieftain of the ruling APC.
