The Ogu General Assembly (OGA) has on Tuesday, expressed its heartfelt commiseration with the entire Ogu people, following the death of Aholu Menu-Toyi 1, the Akran of Badagry.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the late Akran passed away on Monday.
In a statement signed by its convener, Prof. Jendele Hungbo, the assembly described the traditional ruler’s demise, as a significant “node in history”.
According to him, the announcement of his passing sent ripples through Lagos State and the Nigerian traditional institution, marking the conclusion of a historic and transformative reign spanning almost half a century.
“Having ascended the throne nearly 49 years ago, the Akran was not just a custodian of tradition, but a pillar of stability for the South West region.
“As the Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, his influence extended far beyond the ancient coastal city, impacting the socio-political landscape of the entire state,” he said.
Hungbo also highlighted the late ruler’s unique blend of traditional wisdom and modern intellectualism.
“Before his coronation, the Akran was a distinguished ace journalist and an accomplished classroom teacher, backgrounds that fueled his lifelong passion for knowledge and cultural advocacy.
“His reign was defined by a tireless commitment to preserving the rich history of the Ogu people, while simultaneously driving modern development and infrastructure to the Badagry corridor.
“We will miss the royal candour, the regal presence, and the fatherly counsel he put at our disposal at all times,” he said
He emphasised that while the nation mourns, they are consoled by the late Akran’s enduring legacy of peaceful co-existence and inter ethnic cohesion.
“His ability to maintain harmony in a diverse and rapidly evolving Lagos State remains one of his most praised achievements as a traditional ruler,” he said.
As the kingdom enters a period of mourning, the Ogu General Assembly called for prayers for the bereaved royal family, and the people of Badagry.
Hungbo prayed for a smooth and peaceful transition of traditional leadership, which would ensure that the foundation of unity laid by the king remains unshaken.
“The transition of this giant of the Ogu nation marks the end of a remarkable era, but his influence on Nigerian culture and history is expected to resonate for generations to come,” he said. (NAN)
