Super Eagles and Leganes of Spain defender, Kenneth Omeruo and ex-international, Julius Aghahowa have differ on goalkeeper Maduka Okoye’s performance in Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2021)round of 16 clash against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia held at Stade Omnisport Roumdé Adjia, Garoua.
Okoye’s inability to stop A 47th-minute strike by Youssef Msakni that gifted Tunisia a 1-0 victory over Nigeria as the three-time African champions crashed out of the championship.
Omeruo speaking in defence of the Watford bound player, said that the strike was well taken by the Tunisian and could have beaten any goalkeeper.
“He is not feeling fine right now but you know I said to him ‘Listen you’ve been amazing. It’s been a good tournament for you’,” Omeruo told BBC Sport Africa.
“Anybody can be beaten by that goal. It’s a good strike and also it wasn’t a clear situation, because we the defenders were in front of him as well, so that would distract his view as well.

“I wouldn’t say that goal was his fault at all, you know and one thing I do after such tournaments is I delete my social media because you find people who, some of them, don’t even know football.
“There is just angry because we are Nigerians and we want to win every game.”
But Aghahowa disagreed, insisting that Sparta Rotterdam of Holland safe hands should have done better.
“Okoye should have saved that ball because he saw the ball coming towards his direction,” Aghahowa told Brila FM.
“I am really disappointed and feel he should have done better. This was a game we don’t deserve to lose at all. But it has happened, and we have to accept our fate.”
