The expanded medical outreach for 2020 in Yobe North Senatorial District initiated by Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has offered eye related treatment to more than 5000 patients as over 6000 others benefit from the free annual event.
The Senate President, prior to assumption of office, started the outreach through his foundation in 2018 with main focus on eye related medical conditions which has been extended in scope of treatment and number of beneficiaries, a statement by the special adviser on media to Lawan, Ola Awoniyi, said.
This development, according to him, led to the free surgeries for hernia, perineal tear, fibroid and uterine descent, free gynaecological checks and treatment for hypertension, diabetes and other ailments.
Lawan, who flagged off the annual event at the weekend in the General Hospital, Gashua, and Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Nguru, all in Yobe State, lamented that the majority of the beneficiaries didn’t have the means to receive any medical attention.
He said: “We believe this is a worthwhile venture that will make people lives better. This intervention means a lot, makes a lot of difference in the lives of many of them. And we are doing it to complement the efforts of the Yobe State government.
“The Yobe State government has been doing fantastically well in this area but we believe that we have some areas that we can also bring in our Intervention to support the state government.
“I think we are doing the right thing and I believe that next year, by the Grace of God, we will do more if we see more people who need our Intervention.”
The outreach was closely followed by another engagement of the Senate President during his three day visit to his constituency: flagging off the construction of some township roads in both Gashua and Nguru.
While receiving the victims of recent flood in parts of his constituency at Bade and Jakusko Local Government Areas, the Senate President distributed relief materials comprising about 400 bags of cement, 480 bundles of zinc roofing sheets, 1150 love of timber and 160 bags of nails to them.
Lawan also assured the beneficiaries that the gestures were his personal intervention to complement the efforts of the state government and gave out a total of 650 bags each of rice, maize and millet to others whose farmlands were affected.
Earlier, the Medical Director, FMC, Nguru, Dr Abubakar Muhammad, gave an assurance that the highest quality of care would be accorded the patients from the screening through surgery, post operative period and would also follow them up till they are completely healed.
The flag off ceremony was witnessed by the Emir of Bade, Abubakar Sulaiman Umar, Emir of Nguru, Alhaji Mustapha Ibn Kyari and Speaker of Yobe State House of Assembly, Hon. Ahmed Lawan Mirwa, among other dignitaries.
