Man jailed in Ekiti for stealing bottled water

An Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court, sitting in Ado Ekiti, has sentenced one Adesile Mayowa to three months imprisonment for stealing N4,500 worth of bottled water.

While delivering his judgment on Friday, Chief Magistrate Titilola Olaolorun, said the defendant appears remorseful and does not waste the time of the court by letting the court go through the whole hog of the trial.

Following the development,” he is hereby sentenced to three months imprisonment, or in the alternative, pay a fine of N10,000 as an option of fine having admitted that he was caught in the process of stealing”

The charge preferred against the accused person, Adesile, on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at about 6:00 am indicated that he stole six-packs of bottled water, valued at N4,500 from one Alhaji Babalola Isiaka, a resident of Ado Ekiti capital city.

The offense he committed is punishable under section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap. C16, Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria, 2012.

In his testimony before the court, the complainant said, his goods worth over N200, 000 had been stolen recently, because of this, he employed a security guard, who arrested the convict while burgling the shop and stealing the packs of the bottled water.

The accused person, 38 years, was later handed over to the men of the Rapid Response Squad of the Nigerian Police Force, for further investigation and arraignment.

When the charge was read to the Osun State-born convict, he admitted that he committed the offense and pleaded guilty, but prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.

The Police prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, narrated how the convict was caught at the scene of the crime and arrested.
