Myanmar’s coup: China studying situation

China hopes that all sides in Myanmar can appropriately handle their differences under the constitution and legal framework and safeguard political and social stability, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Monday.

Myanmar’s military took over the control of the country in a coup and declared a state of emergency, following the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior government leaders in early morning raids Monday.

The country woke up to widespread internet and communications blackouts, closed banks, and soldiers in army fatigues patrolling the streets of Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon.

Residents on Myanmar are turning on their television sets could only access the military-owned Myawaddy TV channel, with all other news channels seemingly blocked.

“We have noted what has happened in Myanmar and are in the process of further understanding the situation,’’ Wang told a regular news briefing.

“China is a friendly neighbour of Myanmar.

“ We hope that all sides in Myanmar can appropriately handle their differences under the constitution and legal framework and safeguard political and social stability,’’ he added.
