The National Judicial Council, NJC, has recommended the appointment of 11 Justices to the Supreme Court bench.
These recommendations were taken at a meeting of the councils on Wednesday, December 6 2023 as disclosed in a statement by the NJC director of information, Soji Oye.
The Supreme Court has been at its all-time lowest of 10 justices instead of 21 which makes a complete bench.
Recall that at the celebration of the Supreme Court’s new legal year last week, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola had promised to see the Supreme Court bench complete in a short while.
According to the statement, the NJC considered the list of candidates presented by its Interview Committee at its 104th meeting held today.
The NJC also recommended the appointment of one Justice of the Court of Appeal, six heads of court, and 26 other judicial officers.
The committee recommended the names of successful candidates as Heads of Courts and other Judicial Officers for the Federal and State courts in Nigeria.
The recommendations of the 11 Justices for the Supreme Court bench by NJC will be sworn in after the approval of their recommendation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and subsequent confirmation of their appointment by the Senate.
The various Heads of Court recommended would also be sworn in upon the approval of their appointment by their various State Governors and subsequent confirmation of same by their respective State Houses of Assemblies the statement noted.
The names of successful candidates as heads of courts and other judicial officers for the federal and state courts are as stated.
