The ancient city of Benin, venue for this year’s Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership Super 6 on Friday evening welcomed Reigning Champions, Rivers Angels as they set to face-off with five other teams for the ultimate crown and sole ticket to the second edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League.

The Edwin Okon-led side landed with a contingent of 25 players and eleven officials and settled into their hotel base before sunset. The team will be training on Saturday ahead of their opening game against Bayelsa Queens on Monday, May 16 inside the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

Rivers Angels finished the regular NWFL season in second position with 23 points, one point behind group leaders Bayelsa Queens, their first opponents in the season-ending playoff final.

Upon arrival in Benin, team captain Catherine Kenneth said the journey from Port Harcourt to Benin was a smooth one with the team settling in and can’t wait to get down to business on Monday.

“We just arrived Edo State for the Super 6 tournament and the expectations are high, knowing that we are the defending champions, everyone wants to win and equally beat Rivers Angels but we are not letting these things get to us,” began the defender.

“We are not relenting, the team spirit is high, although we are a bit tired from the trip but we’re settling in and ready to have a wonderful experience in the Super 6 tournament.

“The coaches are making arrangements for the team to resume training tomorrow (Saturday) because we have a big game on Monday and we need to prepare our minds. There’s no doubt this year’s Super 6 is going to be one of the best we ever had.
