Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for stronger cooperation between Nigeria and Canada in advancing democratic governance, economic development and inclusive political participation.
Obi made the call after meeting with the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, and his team on Monday at the invitation of the Canadian High Commission.
In a statement on Tuesday, Obi said discussions at the meeting focused on Nigeria’s forthcoming elections and Canada’s support for strengthening the country’s democratic processes.
He said both sides also exchanged views on trade and investment, economic development, education and the need for affirmative measures to increase women’s participation and representation in politics.
Obi stressed that a peaceful, stable and well-governed Nigeria remained in Canada’s strategic interest, arguing that a prosperous Nigeria would create greater opportunities for stronger partnerships between both countries and the wider African continent.
He said, “I reiterated my conviction that a well-governed, peaceful, stable and prosperous Nigeria is firmly in Canada’s strategic interest.”
The former governor also highlighted the need to strengthen democratic institutions and increase citizens’ participation in governance, saying every Nigerian should have a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the country’s political process regardless of gender or background.
Obi said he looked forward to sustained engagement with Canada’s diplomatic and business communities in pursuing partnerships capable of contributing to a more prosperous, secure and inclusive Nigeria.
