Ogunjimi begins ECOWAS tenure with welfare support for Nigerian troops in Gambia

Nigeria’s first Vice-President of the Economic Community of West African States Commission, Anthony Oluwatosin Ogunjimi, has begun his tenure with interventions aimed at improving the welfare and living conditions of Nigerian troops serving in The Gambia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday after receiving Ogunjimi at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

She said Ogunjimi’s first official mission was to visit Nigerian officers and soldiers serving in The Gambia under an ECOWAS mission, where he provided support to improve their working and living conditions.

According to her, the interventions included the provision of 14 air-conditioning units, reconstruction of toilet facilities, improvement of temporary accommodation for soldiers, construction and rehabilitation of sentry posts, and installation of ceilings in some accommodation blocks.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu described the visit as an indication of Ogunjimi’s commitment to the welfare of personnel serving under regional peace and security arrangements.

She said Nigeria looked forward to working with ECOWAS to advance the shared interests of member states and deliver practical benefits to the West African community.

The minister congratulated Ogunjimi on his appointment, expressing hope that his tenure would strengthen cooperation among member states and produce tangible results for the region.
