Okonjo-Iweala accepts apology from newspaper over sexist remarks

Newly-appointed Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has accepted an apology from a Switzerland-based newspaper that described her as a “grandmother” following the announcement of her appointment.

Okonjo-Iweala, in a tweet on Monday, welcomed the apology and urged people to “call out this behaviour when it happens.”

“ I am thankful to all my sisters, UN Women Leaders and the 124 Ambassadors in Geneva who signed the petition on calling out the racist and sexist remarks in this newspaper. It is important & timely that they’ve apologised.

“We need to call out this behaviour when it happens. This is precisely what my book “Women and Leadership” coauthored with @JuliaGillard talks about- the sterotypes women face when they take on leadership positions,” the tweets read.

The paper, Aargauer Zeitung’s foreign editor-in-chief Samuel Schumacher had apologized in a statement on Friday, describing the headline which read ““This grandmother will become the boss of the WTO,” as “inappropriate and unsuitable.”
