Govt priotises lavish spending over patrotism – Obi reacts to Super Eagles plight

In a statement he shared via his social media accounts on Wednesday, Obi lamented that while the players are owed their hard-earned allowances, the government seems to find funds for “needless lavish spending and political patronage, yet we cannot pay those who patriotically raise our flag, bring us pride, and serve with dedication. That is what is found in a ‘now disgraced country’.”

Obi emphasised that the treatment of national heroes is a reflection of a country’s values and priorities.

“When those who serve their country are not treated with dignity, it sends the wrong message to our youth, that hard work and service are not rewarded,” he stated.

The former presidential aspirant urged the government to prioritise the welfare of those who represent Nigeria, stressing that prompt payment and respect for the players are essential.

“Those who represent Nigeria deserve to be paid promptly and treated with respect,” Obi insisted.

Obi concluded by emphasising the need for better governance and prioritisation of national values. “We must do better,” he said, calling on the government to take immediate action to address the issue.

Earlier, the Super Eagles staged a protest over non-payment of their allowances, sparking widespread concern and debate.

The players demanded immediate payment of their outstanding allowances, citing financial difficulties and lack of support from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the government.

The situation has drawn criticism from fans, former players, and prominent Nigerians, who are calling on the authorities to address the issue and ensure the welfare of the country’s top football talents.
