Oshiomhole, Bamidele, Umahi, others win senatorial seats in Edo, Ekiti, Ebonyi

As the results of elections for Nigeria’s presidency and the National Assembly trickled in last night, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) made some marginal gains by way of victory proclamations.

The Deputy Director-General of the All-Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, has been declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner of Saturday’s election for Edo North Senatorial District in Edo.

The INEC Returning Officer, Benjamin Adesina, yesterday in Auchi, declared Oshiomhole as the winner of the polls with 107,110 votes.

He defeated the incumbent Senator Francis Alimekhena of the People Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 55,344 votes.

In Ekiti State, the senator representing the Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Opeyemi Bamidele, was returned as one of the three winning APC candidates in Saturday’s election in the state.

Also, the former Governor of Ogun, Gbenga Daniel, who contested on the platform of APC has been declared the winner of the Ogun-East Senatorial election held on Saturday.
INEC Returning Officer for the senatorial district, Christopher Onwuka, announced the results on Sunday at the collation centre in Itoro Hall, Ijebu-Ode.

Onwuka said Mr Daniel scored 115,147 votes to defeat his closest rival, Ajibola Kalejaiye of the PDP, who scored 58,708 votes.
In Ogun West District, Solomon Adeola of the APC was declared the winner.

Oluseye Onabanjo, the INEC returning officer for the senatorial district, made the declaration on Sunday at Orona Hall in Ilaro.

Onabanjo said Adeola polled a total of 112, 887 votes to defeat his closest rival, Ganiyu Obanibasiri of the PDP, who scored 60,189 votes.

Meanwhile, Jimoh Ibrahim of the APC was declared the winner of the senatorial seat for the Ondo South district.

Ibrahim polled 110,665 votes to defeat a former deputy governor of the state, Agboola Ajayi of the PDP, who polled 65, 784 votes.

It was also celebration time in faraway Ebonyi State on the election date as Governor David Umahi scored 250 votes to emerge victorious at the Ebonyi South APC senatorial fresh election in the state.

The election, which took place at the Afikpo North local government headquarters, witnessed the heavy presence of security operatives, APC supporters, and journalists, among others.

Declaring the results, the chairman of the electoral panel for the Ebonyi South district election, Prof. Emmanuel Adebayo, affirmed that Umahi having scored the highest number of votes is declared the winner of the election.

According to him, a total of 275 votes were cast; 268 votes were valid while seven were invalid.

For the House of Representatives slot, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila won in his Surulere, Lagos constituency, for the sixth time.

Gbajabiamila, of the APC, won 19,717 votes, while Bolaji Jeje of the PDP came second with 5,121 votes.

In the Agege Constituency in Lagos, Dr Wale Ahmed was declared the winner.

The INEC Returning Officer for the Agege, Prof. Alabi Shoneye, made the declaration at the collation centre in the Orile Agege area of the state.

The APC candidate polled 27,445 votes to beat his closest rival, Sola Osolana of the PDP, who had 13,376 votes.

In Plateau, the member representing Langtang North/Langtang South in the House of Representatives, Beni Lar, won the seat for the fifth time in a row, following Saturday’s elections.
Lar, the PDP candidate, scored 14,899 votes, to beat her closest opponent, Vincent Venmak, the council boss of Langtang South, the APC candidate who polled 8,871 and was declared the winner.

She also defeated the former Minister of Sports during President Muhammadu Buhari’s first tenure, Solomon Dalung, in the election Dalung contested on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Beni is a lawyer and daughter of the first civilian governor of old Plateau State and founding National Chairman of the PDP,  the late Chief Solomon Lar.
There was an upset in Enugu State where the LP created an upset with the defeat of PDP’s Pat Asadu.

LP candidate for Nsukka-Igbo-Eze-South Federal Constituency, Mark Obetta was the winner in the election declared by Romanus Nwachukwu, for the constituency election result announced yesterday.

Obetta polled 50,881 votes to defeat his closest rival, Vitalis Abba of the PDP, who scored 19,347 votes.

Enugu is considered a PDP state because it is controlled by a PDP governor.

The party has not lost any election in the state since 1999.
