PDP has no factions, convention will hold – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has rejected assertions of internal divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring that the party remains cohesive as it prepares for its next national convention.

Speaking on Wednesday after inspecting a series of ongoing infrastructure projects across the FCT, Wike dismissed claims that rival blocs or “camps” exist within the opposition party. He acknowledged that while some members may hold differing views, such disagreements do not amount to a structural split.

According to him, dissatisfaction among a few individuals is not unusual in politics, noting that some aggrieved members have already begun reaching out in the spirit of reconciliation. However, he stressed that these concerns do not translate into factionalization.

“There may be individuals who are not happy, and some have even appealed to move forward and let bygones be bygones, but that does not mean there is a faction. There is only one PDP,” he said.

On the party’s internal calendar, the minister affirmed that preparations for the forthcoming convention would continue without delay, regardless of ongoing reconciliation efforts. He pointed out that the timeline for party activities is guided by provisions in the Electoral Act and regulations set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), particularly as political parties move toward primary elections.

Beyond party matters, Wike expressed optimism about the steady progress of key infrastructure projects in the nation’s capital. He attributed the administration’s ability to sustain project delivery despite broader economic constraints to strong institutional discipline and backing from President Bola Tinubu.

He emphasized that effective governance is driven more by commitment than by the volume of available resources, adding that consistent support from the presidency has played a crucial role in maintaining the current pace of development in the FCT.

“The progress we are seeing is not just about funding but about dedication. With the President’s support, there is no room for excuses,” Wike stated.
