People told Tinubu I wanted to assassinate him — Shettima

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has revealed that some individuals allegedly attempted to create distrust between him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shortly after they assumed office in 2023.

Speaking on Tuesday during the presentation of “My Life of Duty and Allegiance,” the autobiography of former Head of State Yakubu Gowon, Shettima said certain persons from his home state of Borno informed the president that he was plotting to assassinate him and seize power.

According to the vice-president, the allegation was linked to traditional outfits he had earlier gifted Tinubu before the presidential election.

Shettima recounted that about three months after their inauguration, Tinubu invited him for a discussion and disclosed that some individuals had advised him to stop wearing the clothes gifted to him by the vice-president.

He quoted the president as dismissing the claims, noting that the narrative lacked credibility because the clothes were presented at a time when neither of them was certain of emerging as the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of their party.

The vice-president said Tinubu eventually continued wearing the outfits, describing the president as someone who does not believe in superstition or fetish claims.

Shettima also used the occasion to call on Nigerians to promote unity and peaceful coexistence, urging citizens to see one another as brothers rather than encouraging division and mistrust.
