Poland, Sweden, partner to humanitarian situation in Ukraine

Poland has assured to work closely with Sweden to encourage a joint response to the difficult humanitarian situation in Ukraine

Uchechi Dakoru, Assistant to the Ambassador of Poland in Nigeria said in a statement on Friday that both countries would organize conferences in such regard, to achieve the desired goal.

“The conference aims to raise funds for Ukraine’s growing humanitarian needs; Poland and Sweden want to encourage their partners to jointly respond to the difficult humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

“As a result of Russian aggression, there are civilian casualties, organized forced deportations, and the financial situation of millions of people is constantly deteriorating.

“Today, real solidarity is needed to effectively support Ukrainian society.”

He quoted the UN to have said that 13 million people living in Ukrainian territory were in need of vital humanitarian aid; including shelter, food, and medical supplies.

According to him, it is, therefore, essential to mobilize immediate international aid for Ukraine, which currently covers less than 15 percent of what is needed.

He said the Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, and the Prime Minister of Sweden, Magdalena Andersson, would put up the Polish-Swedish initiative for Ukraine as a Donors’ Conference in Warsaw.

“An international donors’ conference for Ukraine is to be held in Warsaw on May 5, 2022.

“The event is spearheaded by Morawiecki and Andersson in partnership with President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and President of the European Commission, Ursula Leyen.

“This initiative aims to provide humanitarian support for Ukraine,” Dakoru said.

He further said that the meeting would be convened at the Heads of State and government level with the participation of global business and financial institutions’ representatives.

He, however, said the conference would initiate a series of aid events for war-ravaged Ukraine in the upcoming months.
