Police arrest suspected cultist, recover firearm in Oyo

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 21-year-old suspect, Salami Obisesan, following an intelligence-led operation in the Ita Baale area of Ogbori, Efon, carried out by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit in collaboration with the Amotekun Corps.

The development was contained in a statement issued by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, anipr, MNISMA, on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

According to the statement, a cut-to-size locally made firearm was recovered from the suspect during the coordinated operation based on credible intelligence.

The command said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly obtained the weapon from a friend currently serving a prison sentence at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect obtained the firearm from a friend who is currently serving a prison sentence at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre,” the statement said.

It further disclosed that the suspect confessed to being a member of the Neo Black Movement, also known as the Black Axe confraternity.

The police added that the suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the firearm possession and to identify possible accomplices.

The recovered firearm has been taken as an exhibit for further forensic examination.

The Command reiterated its commitment to combating cultism, illegal possession of firearms, and other criminal activities across the state, while urging residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
