A senior lawyer and human rights campaigner, Ebun Adegboruwa was yesterday invited by the police authorities for a chat today ‘to deliberate further on your request’.
Adegboruwa, a Lagos lawyer, had written the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the police authorities in his capacity as the legal adviser to a group, Take It Back, threatening August 1st to start a 10-day protest termed Bad Governance.
The IGP had earlier requested the organisers to provide the details of the said protest and its organisers for the police to be able to provide adequate protection as it feared it might be hijacked as it was done in 2020 during the #EndSARS protest, which was hijacked by hoodlums.
The police in the letter also assured Adegboruwa that its senior officer had been assigned to attend to the request made by the senior lawyer on the planned protest.
The letter, written and signed by Johnson Adeola, Commissioner of Police (CP) read, “I have the honour to convey the warm compliments of the Inspector-General of Police and acknowledge the receipt of your letter A&C RC/L21/07/2024, dated July 26, 2024, on the above-mentioned subject.
“I am to inform you that the IG has directed the Deputy Inspector-General (Operations and Intelligence). The Assistant Inspectors of Police in charge of Zonal Police HQs and the Commissioners of Police wish to have a meeting with you at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, to deliberate further on your request.”
It added, “While looking forward to your attendance. Accept the assurances of the esteemed regards of the IG.”
