Police scraps notorious E-Crack Squad after operative extorts N.15m from student

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Friday Egboka has scrapped the Eagle Crack Squad of the Rivers State police Command.
The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, said the dissolution came after a meeting of the state management meeting of the police command in Port Harcourt.
The dissolution of the squad came after a student of the University of Port Harcourt revealed that members of the E-Crack Squad had forced him to transfer the sum of N150,000 to them otherwise they would shoot him.
It was members of the E-Crack Squad attached to the Mile One Police Station that in January last year killed one Chima Ikwunado, a motor mechanic on a false allegation that he and four other mechanics were caught with a stolen car.
The killing caused massive protests in Port Harcourt that eventually led to the orderly room trial of the policemen involved and their dismissal from the force and charged to court.
Excerpts from the police statement announcing the disbandment of the Eagle Crack Squad read as follows, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Eboka Friday has dissolved the Eagle Crack Squad. This was done this morning after a meeting with his Management Team.
“The dissolution is coming on the heels of Complaints of unprofessional conduct exhibited by the Personnel of the Unit.
“Recall that the CP in his Maiden Press Briefing on Tuesday promised to address all cases of infractions by the Police and increase supervision of the men, with a stern warning to deal with erring officers and hold DPOs/HODs vicariously liable.

“The dissolution is with immediate effect and all Personnel attached to the Unit are to report to the Headquarters for redeployment.
“The public is hereby enjoined to rekindle their trust in the Police, as the Command is committed to giving them improved Policing services that will stand the test of time.”
The Uniport student who said personnel of the E-Crack Squad that extorted N150,000 from him, said one of the policemen forgot his mobile telephone in his car.
Meanwhile, no news has been received yet about the Uniport lecturer, Dr. Jones Ayuwo, and King Ikuru of Andoni, who were abducted on Sunday evening. The police commissioner had vowed on Monday to rescue the abductees.
