Politics demands commitment, not contract chasing – Wike takes swipe at Makinde

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, accusing him of focusing more on business interests than active political engagement.

Wike made the remarks during a meeting with party members, as reported by Channels Television on Monday, March 23, 2026, while reflecting on the demands of political leadership and his approach to governance.

Drawing a contrast between himself and Makinde, the FCT minister said he had always been driven by the pursuit of political power and influence, while alleging that the Oyo governor was more inclined toward securing contracts.

“I was watching my friend, Seyi Makinde, and I said to myself, I wanted power, but you wanted to be a contractor,” Wike said.

He further claimed that Makinde had recently travelled to Bauchi State in pursuit of business deals, including engagements linked to Chevron, reinforcing his criticism of what he described as a transactional approach to politics.

Wike stressed that politics requires commitment, resilience, and sacrifice, noting that effective leadership often comes with pressure, sleepless nights, and constant demands.

The minister also downplayed the importance of numbers in political representation, arguing that competence and influence matter more than having a large number of elected officials.

According to him, even a few capable lawmakers can make a significant impact if they are effective in advancing the interests of their constituents and party.

Despite ongoing tensions within the party, Wike reaffirmed his loyalty and ruled out any plans to defect, emphasizing the need for reconciliation among members.

He added that efforts to resolve internal disputes would continue beyond the party’s national convention, expressing optimism that unity could still be achieved.
