Bayo Onanuga, a spokesperson to President Bola Tinubu, has tasked the Nigeria Police force to arrest Nigerians peddling fake news about the ongoing Presidential Election Tribunal.
Making this call in a Tweet on Thursday, Mr Onanuga raised concerns about the ‘reckless way’ some Nigerians were spreading fake news.
According to him, Nigerians “should all be worried by the reckless way some Nigerians are dishing and spreading fake news in the social media, with impunity.
“The Appeal Court, the Supreme Court have just debunked two of such malicious false news aimed at destroying our judiciary, all because of politics.”
Calling on the police to wake up to their duties, and pick up those spreading fake news, Onanuga explained that cybercrime law makes provision for punishments for fake news peddlers
“The police should wake up to their duties. Our country has a Cybercrime law that deals with fake news. Let the police implement the law or else fake news will destroy our country, ” Onanuga added.

His comment comes just as the Supreme Court debunked claims that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola spoke with President Tinubu about the Presidential election Tribunal proceedings.
Recall that Nigerian journalist, Jackson Udeh had claimed that the CJN asked President Tinubu to prepare for a rerun, suggesting that things might not go in the president’s favor.
However president Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress debunked the claim, saying that such phone call never happened.
