Qatar 2022: S’Eagles need your support, not condemnation, Ovie charges fans

By Francis Ajuonuma
Ex-international, Patrick Ovie has urged Nigerians to stop their harsh criticism of the Super Eagles and give the players the maximum support needed to achieve the desired result in the ongoing Qatar 2022 FIFA World Qualifiers for Africa.

The Super Eagles, presently, top in group C of the Africa qualifiers with six points from two matches following victories over Liberia and Cape Verde, but a session of Nigerians have been very critical of the team quality of play in both matches.

Patrick, who spoke, while reacting to the Super Eagles 2-1 away victory over Cape Verde in Mindelo last Tuesday evening, noted that critics have not been fair to the team, even in the face of two victories, saying that what the Eagles need in any match of the qualifiers is nothing but victory and not beautiful football.

“Victory first. No matter how good football you play, the most important thing is victory; three points. If you play beautiful football and at the end you lose nobody will see that you played well because you didn’t get the result. So, football is about achieving the desire result. No matter how you play, just get the result.

“I’m happy with their performance and I want them to remain focused because it’s not over yet as they have four more matches to go to decide their fate in group C. So I commend them for the away victory in Mindelo and urge them to keep it,” said the former Dinamo Moscow of Russia centre back.

“Also, I want to use this opportunity to beg Nigerians that at this moment, the Super Eagles need their support and not condemnation,” concluded Patrick Ovie, who also starred for 3SC of Ibadan and Russia’s PFC Krylia Sovetov Samara.
