The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday unveiled 54 construction equipment procured by the Edo State Government for the 18 local government councils, describing the move as a major boost to grassroots development and a step that strengthens President Bola Tinubu’s re-election prospects.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Benin City, Wike praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for prioritising rural development and empowering local governments to drive economic growth.

“You have demonstrated that you love the economy of the local government. You have demonstrated that development must reach rural areas. You have laid the foundation for Mr President to be re-elected,” Wike said.

He added that the investment in grassroots infrastructure reflects the administration’s alignment with the broader national development agenda.

Governor Okpebholo described the equipment as critical tools for deepening development and improving service delivery at the grassroots.

“Today marks a significant step in our commitment to grassroots development in Edo State in line with our SHINE Agenda,” the governor said.

He stressed that development must reach rural communities and not be limited to urban centres.

“Development must not be concentrated at the centre; it must reach every village, every community and every ward. Our local governments must have the capacity to deliver practical governance for the Edo people,” he said.

Okpebholo said the equipment would be deployed to open rural roads, improve drainage, strengthen sanitation and accelerate infrastructure delivery.

“These machines are tools of transformation. They are not for show. They are not for storage. They are for work,” he added.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, said the governor’s actions demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of ordinary citizens.

“By the governor’s actions, he is demonstrating that under his watch, the local government will be developed in Edo State,” Oshiomhole said.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Edo State and Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Area, Sunny Ekpeson, said the initiative would enhance grassroots governance and support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu.

APC State Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, said the equipment symbolised practical governance and visible development across the state.

The event was attended by top government officials, lawmakers, council chairmen and party leaders, and is seen as part of efforts to strengthen local government capacity and accelerate rural infrastructure development in Edo State.
