Response to false allegation on Delta Gov and UPU by Ijaw group
By Lennox Gold
We are aware of recent statements made by the Ogbe-Ijoh Interest and Defensive Forum (OIDF) regarding the governor of Delta State, His Excellency Sheriff Oborevwori, and the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU). It is important to address the false allegations and provide clarification on the matter.
Firstly, the allegations made by the OIDF that the governor and Urhobo leaders are wrongly painting the Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communal crisis as an ethnic conflict are unfounded. It is crucial to understand that conflicts of this nature are complex and multifaceted, often involving historical, cultural, and economic factors. It is the responsibility of the government and community leaders to ensure that such conflicts are properly addressed and resolved in a peaceful and just manner.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has consistently demonstrated his commitment to fostering peace, unity, and harmonious coexistence among different ethnic groups in Delta State. His efforts to engage various stakeholders and promote dialogue as a means of resolving conflicts are commendable. It is unfair and misleading to accuse him of taking sides or inciting violence.
Furthermore, the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU) is a socio-cultural organisation that seeks to promote the welfare and interests of the Urhobo people. Their support for the resolution of the Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh conflict should be seen as a positive step toward finding a lasting solution. It is not productive to create divisions or assign blame based on ethnic affiliations.
We urge all parties involved to exercise restraint, engage in constructive dialogue, and work towards a peaceful resolution. The government, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders should collaborate to address the root causes of the conflict and ensure the safety and well-being of all affected communities.
In conclusion, it is essential to avoid spreading false information and promoting divisive narratives. We encourage the OIDF and other groups to focus on constructive engagement and contribute to the peace-building efforts in Delta State. Together, we can achieve sustainable peace and development for all communities in the region.
