Rivers Assembly crisis: Appeal court orders parties to maintain status quo

An Appeal Court sitting in Port Harcourt has directed all parties involved in the appeal filed by some members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to maintain status quo.

In a suit marked CA/PH/198/2024, the court ruled that pending the hearing of the substantive suit, all parties involved should not take any step that would affect the merit of the matter.

Recall that 27 lawmakers had approached the court to stop moves to declare their seats vacant for allegedly decamping from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Led by Martin Chike Amaewhule, the lawmakers instituted a suit against Victor Oko-Jumbo and five other defendants to vacate the Interlocutory Injunction of a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, which recognised Oko-Jumbo as the speaker.

In a proceeding held through Zoom, the three-member Appeal panel comprised Justice Jimi Olukayode Bada, Justice Hamma Akawu and Justice Balkisu Bello Aliyu, adjourned the matter till the 20th of July.
