Rivers Govt stops meeting of Igbo communities

By Emma Obe
Rivers State Government has ordered the cancellation of the proposed meeting of Igbo communities scheduled to hold at Oyigbo on Saturday.

A statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Paulinus Nsirim, said the meeting convened under the aegis of United Igbo Communities had to be cancelled because it could be a threat to peace and order in the area.

Nsirim said security agencies had been directed to ensure that the meeting did not hold.

Security agencies in the state had been placed on red alert following attacks on security formations in neighbouring Imo State. During last year’s #EndSARS protests, Oyigbo was a hotbed of violence, where police stations were burnt down and several security operatives killed. In response, the state government placed a lockdown on Oyigbo which lasted for about three months.
