The Senate has called on stakeholders to support the current administration’s fight against the deplorable state of education in the country.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita, gave the charge during a public hearing in the National Assembly on a Bill Establishing National Institute for Border Studies, Imeko, Ogun State.
He said the committee is willing to set in motion mechanisms that would allow for improvement in all facets of the education sector in the country for a better tomorrow.
“The Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND are therefore reaffirming its commitment in rejuvenating the deplorable state of infrastructure, teaching, and learning conditions in our tertiary institutions via legislative instruments for a sound and virile and vibrant systems with enormous benefits for teeming Nigerian youths,” Kaita stated.
On the proposed institute, the lawmaker expressed hope that it would serve as a pathway for an affordable education resource center for excellence in border management while affirming the committee’s commitment to improving the standard of higher education in the country.

In his speech, Senator Tolulope Odebiyi, who sponsored the bill, said there is no better time to have the border institute than now when fears are rife about the control of the country’s unarmed territorial margins and peripheries.
“This is even more compelling for Nigeria, with over 2000 border entry points (legal and illegal) and the country’s total land borders measuring over 4,477kms. There is the need for the country to do better with the way it positions itself in terms of human capital and indeed, the infrastructure of managing its international boundaries and borderlands,” Odebiyi said.
