Shehu Sani warns against political interference in FIFA after Balogun ban reversal

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has cautioned against political interference in international football administration following FIFA’s decision to suspend the one-match ban imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun.

In a post shared on his X account on Monday, Sani argued that allowing a country’s president to influence disciplinary decisions in football could undermine the independence of global sports governance and set a dangerous precedent.

“If a President of a Country can call the FIFA President to interfere or change a disciplinary decision that has been taken on a player, a dangerous precedent has been set for international sports officiating, not just football administration in the World. I hope FIFA will not have its own UN-style permanent members Security Council,” he wrote.

Sani’s comments followed reports that United States President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino over Balogun’s suspension after the striker was sent off during the United States’ Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Balogun had received a straight red card after a VAR review for a challenge on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic, triggering an automatic one-match suspension under FIFA regulations.

However, FIFA later announced that the suspension had been deferred for a one-year probationary period, making the striker eligible to face Belgium in the Round of 16. The governing body did not provide detailed reasons for the decision.

Trump publicly welcomed FIFA’s move, thanking the organisation for what he described as “reversing a great injustice.” Multiple media reports also claimed the US President had personally appealed to Infantino to review the disciplinary decision.

The decision has generated controversy, with the Royal Belgian Football Association describing FIFA’s action as “astonishing” and saying it was considering its legal options, arguing that the reversal contradicted the tournament’s disciplinary rules.
