The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to national security, military professionalism and the welfare of its personnel as it honoured veterans and serving soldiers during a Gala Night held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as part of activities marking the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).
The Army disclosed this in a post shared on its official X page on Monday, noting that the event, held on Sunday ahead of the grand finale of the week-long celebration, recognised the sacrifices of military personnel while promoting national unity and collective resolve towards safeguarding Nigeria’s security and territorial integrity.
Speaking at the EUI Event Centre, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, described NADCEL 2026 as another milestone in the Nigerian Army’s transformation journey.
He said the nationwide activities reflected the Army’s role as a strategic institution of national cohesion and stability, adding that its legacy of courage, resilience and selfless service in peace support missions across Africa and ongoing internal security operations had continued to strengthen national security and inspire confidence in the Armed Forces.
Shaibu paid tribute to fallen heroes, saying their sacrifices remain the foundation upon which the Nigerian Army would continue to build a stronger, safer and more secure Nigeria.
He also reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the welfare of its personnel and the continuous enhancement of its operational capabilities to address emerging security threats.
The Chief of Army Staff further expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the President’s steadfast strategic support for the Nigerian Army, noting that the backing had improved operational effectiveness, force development and mission readiness across various theatres of operation.
Representing the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, described the Gala Night as a fitting occasion to honour officers and soldiers who continue to defend the country.
He paid tribute to fallen heroes, expressed solidarity with their families and commended the Nigerian Army for its role in maintaining peace and security in Rivers State, particularly through its collaboration with the 6 Division Nigerian Army.
Wokoma also reaffirmed the Rivers State Government’s commitment to sustaining partnerships with the Nigerian Army in logistics, operational support and personnel welfare in the interest of national security.
Earlier, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Musa Etsu-Ndagi, said NADCEL 2026 showcased the Nigerian Army’s operational achievements, humanitarian interventions and expanding strategic partnerships.
He acknowledged the humanitarian initiatives of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association under the leadership of its National President and wife of the Chief of Army Staff, as well as the successful hosting of the African Land Forces Summit.
Etsu-Ndagi also appreciated the Rivers State Government, African Chiefs of Army Staff, veterans and the former Force Commander of ECOMOG, Major General Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd), for their enduring contributions to regional peace and security.
