ASUU Suspends Nine Months Old Strike, As FG offers New Win-Win Packages

By David Onimisi Lawani

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has suspended its nine- month old strike. This followed an agreement with the  Federal  government

The Hon. Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, noted that the ASUU executives are to have a brief consultation with their members and give feedback to the government.

Dr. Ngige made this known at the end of another meeting between ASUU and a government delegation, in Abuja, on Tuesday. He did not state the details of the proposal and what was contained therein.

He said: ‘’ the proposals are a win-win situation proposal made for the enhancement of the academic institutions in the country.”

He stressed further that the proposal would address the concluding part of the issues that led to the ASUU strike and that it is hoped that it will put an end to all the issues arising therefrom.

“We started on a nine-point complaint, and a lot of the complaints have been addressed. Today, we conclusively addressed the leftovers.”

The minister reiterated that  past proposals handed over to ASUU by the government have addressed other areas of concern.

“We have had very incisive deliberations. We have crossed some t’s and dotted some i’s in the past proposals given to ASUU by the government, and the areas of concern have also been addressed,” he said.

He said that he hoped the members of ASUU would appreciate the advantage of the benefits of the proposals to the parties involved and accept that they were designed to add value to the academic institutions, and therefore call off their strike action.
