Old students donate sports equipment worth N500,000 to Iroko community school

Old students of Iroko Community Grammar School, Ibadan, Class of ’73, on Friday, donated sports equipment worth N500,000 to their alma mater to commemorate 50th anniversary of their passing out of the school.

 

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the items donated included: table tennis courts, tennis balls, badminton items and basket ball pitch, among others.

 

Speaking on behalf of the Old Students’ Association, the National President, Prof. Akin Alao, said the donation of the items was motivated by the need for the students to develop their skills.

 

Alao, while donating the equipment on behalf of the association at the main hall of the school, thanked God for the lives of the ‘73 set of old students and for the continued existence of the school founded in 1966.

 

According to him, the school has been producing excellent grades due to the foundation laid by the founding fathers, adding that many of the old students were spread all over the world.

 

The national president, who is an old student of 77 set, said that the school was not doing badly, as it currently had the students’ population of more than 1,100.

 

Also speaking, the Head boy for the 73 set, Mr James Oyedokun, urged the students to refrain from joining ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ (internet fraudsters) and leaving the certainty of life for uncertainty.

 

Oyedokun, who described punctuality as the soul of business, appealed to them to do proper things at the appropriate time so as not to miss it all in life.

The facilitator of the programme, Mr Olu Abiala, said that the students could excel in both academics, sports and other endeavours, adding that the sports equipment were provided so that the potentials of the students could be further unleashed.

 

“Fortunately, sports activities are unisex. In few years to come, we want to see some of you excel in sports. You can also study Physical Education, even up to PhD level,” he said.

Abiala, a former Secretary of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State wing, said that the 73 set was the first to write the West African School Certificate examination in June, adding that since then, it had been stories of progress and advancements in the school.

 

While receiving the equipment from the old students, the Principal of the school, Mrs Funmilola Olu-Daniels, appreciated the efforts of the association for deeming it fit to ‘irrigate and transform’ the lives of the students.

 

Olu-Daniels thanked the old students for their kind gestures and love for their alma mater.

 

The school’s Head Boy, Master Lawal Farouk, praised the old students for their support and expressed the hope for more assistance in future. (NAN)
