Rep. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, the Chairman of, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora, has expressed disappointment over the poor quality of work done on Olomi -Ijebu-Igbo Road.
Akande-Sadipe, representing APC-Oluyole Federal Constituency, expressed displeasure when she led Mr Umar Bakare, the Federal Comptroller of Works in Ogun and other Federal Government officials on a joint inspection of the road on Tuesday.
The Olomi – Ijebu-Igbo Road project was being handled by DC Engineering Nigeria Ltd.
In a statement signed by her Media Aide, Olamilekan Olusada, in Ibadan, Akande-Sadipe decried the untold hardship which commuters and motorists were daily facing on the 25 kilometres Olomi – Ijebu-Igbo Road due to its present deplorable condition.
The lawmaker urged the Federal Ministry of Works to prevail on the construction company handling the road project to perform its obligation in the interest of people of the two states- Ogun and Oyo.
“We have gone round and we have seen the Olomi Road. It is in a deplorable state and this is completely unacceptable.
“The design is flawed; it has been more of a death trap. It has led to several deaths and the loss of property.
“How can a bridge on this kind of expanse of the road not be a dual carriageway?
“I thank the Ministry, under the leadership of Mr Babatunde Fashola, as Minister, for honouring our request to help fix our road between Olomi and Ijebu-Ode, which is extremely bad.
“DC Engineering Ltd. has done a very poor job after so many years” adding that many portions of the road were still not motorable,” Akande-Sadipe said.
She urged officers of the ministry to ensure that the funds allocated were well spent and ensure that a satisfactory job was delivered.
The lawmaker said that other roads within the state, which were contracted out at the same time three years ago, had been completed.
She added that within two years, the tarred parts of the Olomi – Ijebu-Igbo Road had developed problems, due to poor quality of work.
Akande-Sadipe also expressed displeasure at the present state of Liberty – Academy Road in Ibadan.
In his remarks, Bakare said that the ministry had taken it upon itself to technically inspect the road, which he noted was in a very bad state.
He promised speedy delivery of the mandates saddled upon the ministry in record time, adding that the inspection directed by the minister would yield progress.
“The ministry would monitor construction of the road and bridges to ease the movement of traffic,” he said.
Bakare thanked Akande-Sadipe for her interventions, noting that there was lack of proper drainage system and link roads to the communities.
Also, Mr Folawiyo Bello, the South-West Commissioner, Public Complaint Commission (PCC), said that the commission would ensure that the issues were dealt with by calling the contractor to order.
Bello explained that the commission has jurisdiction to oversee Federal, State and Local Governments’ projects, promising that they would do the needful in respect of the road.
Commenting, Chief Samuel Oyewale, the Baale of Olomi, commended Akande-Sadipe for her constant infrastructure commitments to the constituency, including the provision of transformers.
Also, Mrs Mary Adeniran, South-West Zonal Coordinator, Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), said that the agency would see to the maintenance of federal roads within Oluyole Federal Constituency.
Adeniran had during the inspection of Liberty – Academy Road, promised to follow up with a critical inspection of the road up to the Ogun border for further rehabilitation.
