The Honourable Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom Wike has urged Nigerians to play a more active role in promoting road safety, insisting that safeguarding lives on highways must be a collective responsibility.
She spoke in Abuja on Friday at her investiture as an Honorary Special Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), where she emphasised the need for citizens to complement government efforts in curbing road accidents.
According to her, reducing crashes across the country requires more than institutional enforcement, calling on road users to adopt responsible behaviour and support ongoing safety initiatives.
Justice Nyesom-Wike also encouraged wider participation in the FRSC Special Marshals programme, describing it as an effective avenue for public involvement in advocacy and traffic management support.
The ceremony, organised by the FCT Sector Command, was conducted by the Zonal Commanding Officer, RS7HQ, Assistant Corps Marshal Comfort Asom, who stood in for the Corps Marshal.
Speaking at the event, Asom underscored the importance of volunteer marshals in advancing road safety campaigns, urging inductees to demonstrate integrity, patriotism and dedication in service.
The event drew key stakeholders, including the National Coordinator of Special Marshals, Engr. Dr. Usman Adaji, alongside several justices of the Court of Appeal.
In his remarks, the FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Tijani Iliyasu, reiterated the command’s resolve to deepen public engagement and broaden safety awareness across the territory.
He added that the inclusion of prominent personalities such as Justice Nyesom-Wike would boost adherence to traffic laws and encourage positive conduct among motorists.
Justice Nyesom-Wike concluded by cautioning against dangerous driving practices and called for heightened national awareness on the tragic impact of road accidents.
