President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday commissioned the 198-kilometre Bwari Township Water Supply Network in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), describing the project as a major step towards expanding access to potable water in satellite towns under his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking during the inauguration in Bwari Area Council, Tinubu said the project connects Bwari and surrounding communities to treated water from the Lower Usuma Dam, ending years of dependence on boreholes and streams.
The President described access to clean water as a basic right and said the project reflected his administration’s commitment to improving the living conditions of residents.
“Water is life. Clean water is dignity. It is a fundamental right, not a luxury. When the FCT Minister drew my attention to the plight of residents in Bwari and its environs, I told him, ‘Go out there, mobilise the best, and fix it.’ Today, we are commissioning this state-of-the-art network. That is how we work. We don’t make excuses; we deliver results,” Tinubu said.
He noted that the project follows the recent commissioning of water and road projects in Karu, adding that the Renewed Hope Agenda remains focused on delivering practical benefits to Nigerians.
According to the President, the Bwari Water Supply Network has generated more than 1,600 direct and indirect jobs while helping to reduce waterborne diseases and the financial burden of drilling private boreholes.
Tinubu commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for driving infrastructure development in the nation’s capital and pledged that similar water projects would be extended to Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada and Abaji before the end of his administration.
“This project belongs to the people of Bwari. It was built with your commonwealth for your benefit and progress. I urge you to protect and preserve it,” he said.
Earlier, Wike said the project fulfilled a directive given by the President during the second anniversary of his administration in 2025 to extend potable water to satellite communities across the FCT.
He said the commissioning of the Bwari project, coming weeks after the inauguration of the Karu Township Water Scheme, demonstrated that the FCT Administration was investing in critical sectors beyond road construction.
“Since President Tinubu assumed office in 2023, water has been provided for the city centre, Karu and now Bwari. This shows we are not concentrating only on roads but also improving other critical sectors,” Wike said.
The minister disclosed that the Bwari Water Supply Network is the 50th project officially commissioned since he assumed office and expressed optimism that 10 additional projects would be inaugurated before political campaigns for the 2027 general elections begin.
He also announced that the 17-kilometre Bwari-Kubwa Road is expected to be completed and commissioned before the end of the year.
In her remarks, Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as a major milestone in implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda, saying it would improve public health, boost livelihoods and strengthen public confidence in government.
Presenting the technical overview, Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Yunana Dauda, said the contract for the project was awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited in August 2025.
He explained that the water network was designed to complement the Greater Abuja Water Project and provide potable water to Bwari and neighbouring communities, including Ushafa, Aji, Zuma, Gaba and Kuchikau, in line with the FCT Master Plan.
