Security presence around the Kano State Government House was noticeably reinforced on Monday amid mounting political tension over the anticipated defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Combined teams of operatives from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services were stationed at major access points, enforcing stricter entry protocols and identity verification for all visitors and staff.
The unusual level of surveillance signalled official concern over possible political unrest linked to the unfolding developments.
The tightened security follows days of intense political consultations and speculation surrounding Governor Yusuf’s future, with multiple sources confirming that preparations are underway for a formal switch to the APC.
Party insiders say the defection, initially expected earlier in January, was delayed to allow coordination with national stakeholders and Kano-based political leaders.
The move has triggered fresh cracks within the NNPP, particularly between Governor Yusuf and his long-time political benefactor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya political movement.
Kwankwaso has openly opposed any defection, warning that such a decision would weaken the party’s structure in Kano and undermine the movement’s grassroots base.
Despite the resistance, Governor Yusuf’s camp appears determined.
Multiple political sources indicate that the defection will involve more than just the governor.
Several local government party structures aligned with him, members of the Kano State House of Assembly, and close political aides are expected to move alongside the governor, signalling a broader realignment rather than an isolated decision.
Earlier defections by NNPP officials within the governor’s political circle had already hinted at the shift.
Analysts say the latest developments suggest a calculated effort to consolidate political control and neutralise opposition ahead of future electoral contests.
While Governor Yusuf has repeatedly denied being at odds with Kwankwaso, the growing divide between their camps has become increasingly difficult to ignore.
The heavy security presence around the Government House is now widely viewed as a precautionary measure against possible protests or internal disruptions as the political transition nears its climax.
Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states, with a vast voter population that has historically shaped national election outcomes.
