Tinubu should resign over insecurity – Hakeem Baba-Ahmed

A national leader of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign before the 2027 general elections, accusing him of failing to effectively address the worsening security situation in Nigeria.

Baba-Ahmed, a former aide to President Tinubu, said the administration has not demonstrated sufficient capacity to protect the lives and property of Nigerians, warning that the country is becoming increasingly unsafe.

He made the remarks on Thursday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he urged Nigerians to reject the President at the next general election if the security situation does not improve.

According to him, the scale of insecurity across the country shows that government has lost control of the situation.

“It’s clear Tinubu has no handle on the escalating menace. Everything that needed to be said by the media, National Assembly, and civil societies have been said, but Tinubu and his supporters believe that this is a problem that we can live with,” he said.

He added that insecurity has spread across the country, leaving even schools and communities exposed to attacks.

“They suggested it by their body language, everywhere, and children are stolen, every inch of Nigeria is now vulnerable,” Baba-Ahmed stated.

The PRP chieftain argued that in a functional democratic system, the level of insecurity currently experienced would have already led to a change in leadership.

“In a civilized society, Tinubu’s record on insecurity should have cost him his seat a long time ago. It’s not too late to say that President Tinubu should resign. If you check what he’s doing between now and the election, we don’t even need to wait, we will reject him,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed maintained that his position was not driven by political rivalry but by concern over governance and national security.

“Do we need to wait until more children and the country is overrun by criminality? The position that Tinubu should resign, there is nothing wrong or partisan or confrontational in that statement,” he said.

He further stressed that a president’s primary responsibility is the protection of citizens and their means of livelihood, arguing that the current administration has fallen short.

“In a democratic setting, the President performs two basic tasks: one is to protect the citizens and the other is to protect the means.

“Now Tinubu has failed to protect anybody. Every part of Nigeria is now vulnerable. Children and toddlers in school are being stolen. What do you say to a president who has failed?

“Sir, you cannot run this country so please step down. It’s not a party thing, it’s not a confrontational thing but the right thing to do,” he added.
