APC has lost direction, ex-Osun commissioner Akeju dumps party

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State and former Commissioner for Political Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations, Taiwo Akeju, on Thursday resigned his membership of the ruling party ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election in the state.

Akeju, a prominent figure in Osun politics who served under the administration of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, announced his resignation in a letter dated June 4, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of the APC in Ward 01, Iwara, Atakumosa East Local Government Area of the state.

In the letter, the former commissioner stated that his resignation takes immediate effect, describing the decision as a personal one reached after a careful assessment of his political journey.

“I hereby resign my membership of All Progressives Congress. Please note that this resignation takes immediate effect.

“This decision is personal and taken after a careful review of my political journey,” the letter read.

Although the resignation letter did not elaborate on the reasons for his departure, Akeju was quoted as saying that the APC had lost its direction, a development that influenced his decision to leave the party.

His exit comes at a critical period as political parties intensify preparations for the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State, scheduled for August 15, 2026.

Akeju is regarded as one of the veteran politicians in the South-West with a long history of political activism and public service spanning several decades.

His political career began in the old Oyo State, covering present-day Oyo and Osun states, where he served as Youth Leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1990.

He later held several strategic positions, including Director of the Osun State Property Development Corporation and Special Assistant to former Senate Leader, Wande Abimbola, between 1992 and 1993.

Akeju was also a founding member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), one of the leading pro-democracy movements that challenged military rule in Nigeria.

According to his political profile, he was arrested, detained and prosecuted for alleged treason and treasonable felony by the military regime of General Sani Abacha in 1994 alongside President Bola Tinubu, the late Beko Ransome-Kuti and labour leader Ola Oni.

The former commissioner also served as Publicity Secretary and Spokesman of the South-West zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 1998 to 2002 and later worked as Special Assistant to the Presidency on Culture and Civil Matters in 2003.

He equally served as Commissioner at the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) during the administration of former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
