Stop heating polity over threat to impeach Akpabio, group warns lawmakers’ loyalists

By Nathaniel Zacchaeus, Abuja

The Coalition for Parliamentary Democracy (CPD), has cautioned loyalists of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and his opponent in the race for Senate Presidency, Abdul-Aziz Yari, to stop the ongoing media war over an alleged impeachment saga currently rocking the red chamber.

The pro-democracy group noted that the media war embarked upon by both parties could affect governance in the country if not immediately checked.

CPD in a statement by its National Coordinator, Dr Menike Johnson, yesterday accused Senator Akpabio’s loyalists of heating the polity.

The group alleged that the first attack came from the Akpabio’s camp who pointed accusing fingers at imaginary senators, claiming that they were plotting impeachment.

CPD claimed that the Akpabio’s loyalists, based on a statement by a prominent member of the Northern Senators Forum, Elisha Abbo, had alleged that the idea behind the phantom plot was to pitch northern senators against President Bola Tinubu.

The group further noted that instead of creating synergy between the executive and the legislative arm of government for meaningful national development, Akpabio’s loyalists had created an imaginary war between the two vital arms of government.

It noted that a statement by northern senators last Saturday by Senator Elisha Ishaku Abbo, had alleged that Akpabio’s loyalists were behind the plot.

The pro-democracy group which is the National Assembly Watch Group, warned Akpabio against falling out of favour with his colleagues in the Senate.

CPD, while reacting to claims “one South-South Governor” was behind the impeachment threat to remove Akpabio, warned the gladiators to stop pointing accusing fingers.

It stated that the nation needs a very stable and united National Assembly at this critical time.

The CDP said, “Nigerians cannot afford to take a Senate that is plagued by an unstable leadership which does not command the loyalty of the lawmakers. It is wrong to resort to a face-saving measure by accusing a state governor of the affairs of the nation’s parliament.

“It is a very dangerous and unstatesmanlike venture that is capable of triggering a crisis in the polity. The attempt to overheat the polity by blaming external individuals is therefore a self-indicting measure that does not provide the much-expected answers to the very critical issue of leadership failure raised by senators against the embattled Senate President.

“Our nation is in a very critical moment and Nigerians cannot afford a Senate that is plagued by an unstable leadership which does not command the loyalty of the lawmakers,” CPD stated.
