The North East Development Commission (NEDC), on Friday met with stakeholders to streamline various humanitarian interventions in the region for maximum result.
The stakeholders were drawn from Borno, Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba, Bauchi, and Yobe states.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive of NEDC, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, said at the meeting in Maiduguri that it was important to coordinate the activities of various intervention organizations in the region for maximum impact.
“There is a lot of activities going on in trying to respond to insurgency and other emergencies in the region.
“We have many players doing different things, sometimes same things at a different level, there is always the need to have a coordinated approach so that we can achieve maximum result for the benefit of the people.
“As par our mandate as a commission, we have been given the right to coordinate activities and today we have this full house meeting,” Alkali said.
In his speech, the NEDC Director of Humanitarian Affairs, Mallam Musa Yashi, said the meeting is expected to agree on a regional coordination mechanism that would ensure effective collaboration and synergy.
Yashi said the draft National Policy on Internally Displaced Persons is being reviewed by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development.
He said that when adopted, the policy would provide a national coordination mechanism for all humanitarian interventions in the country.
“Similarly, the National Humanitarian Coordination Technical Working Group has developed a draft National Humanitarian Development Peace Framework 2021-2025 and when approved, let us key into it,” Yashi urged the stakeholders.
He noted that the commission as an intervention organization would rely on data from various organizations, particularly state emergency management agencies, to enable it to take necessary decisions for quick and timely response to emergencies.

Newsmen’s report that highlights the meeting included the presentation of situation reports by executives of emergency management agencies from Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, and Yobe states.
It also received situation reports from other partners in areas of water, hygiene, sanitation, protection, food security, shelter, and non-food items.
