Wike declares Friday work-free, restricts movement

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day and announced a restriction of movement across Abuja ahead of the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21.

The restriction, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will take effect from 8:00 p.m. on Friday until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Wike directed all security agencies to ensure strict compliance.

The minister made the announcement during a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations on Thursday, urging residents of the FCT to turn out in large numbers to vote for candidates of their choice in the elections for chairmen and councillors across the six area councils.

He called on voters to conduct themselves peacefully and respect both the electoral rules and the outcome of the polls.

“On Saturday, February 21, we will all have a crucial opportunity to shape the future of our great Federal Capital Territory,” Wike said. “The election of either new or returning chairmen and councillors for the six area councils is a momentous occasion, and I urge you to come out in your numbers to exercise your right to vote.”

He added that residents should approach the exercise with a sense of purpose and responsibility, stressing the need for orderliness and lawful conduct throughout the process.

“At this juncture, with the approval of the President, I hereby declare Friday, February 20, 2026, as a work-free day to enable movement of residents to their various communities to participate in the elections,” he stated.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026 into law, describing the move as a demonstration of the President’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring free, fair and transparent elections.

According to the minister, democracy remains a work in progress, noting that continuous review of the Electoral Act would further enhance Nigeria’s democratic process.

Wike expressed optimism that the elections would produce capable leaders who would contribute meaningfully to development, peace and prosperity in the FCT.

“Together, let us build a brighter future for ourselves, our children, and our territory,” he said.
