Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has flagged off the construction of two hostels in the Nigerian Law School, Bwari Area Council, Abuja.
The hostels, 316 bed capacity each for male and female was earlier promised in December 2024 when the minister was in the school to flagg off of staff quarters and the provision of vehicles for the same institution.
Speaking during the event on Monday, Wike described the project as a fulfillment of President Tinubu’s earlier promise to address the acute accommodation shortage facing the institution.
“Let it be on record, and for the doubting Thomases, that within just two years of President Tinubu’s administration, we have visited this Nigerian Law School campus twice through the Honourable Attorney-General. Each visit has brought tangible development,” Wike said.
He recalled that during the flag-off of the Staff Quarters in December 2024, the President, through the Attorney-General, was informed about the shortage of students accommodation; a concern that led to the new project.
“Today, we are here to fulfill that promise. This shows that when you have good leadership, there is nothing difficult in achieving results, and Mr. President has shown good leadership,” he added.
The FCT Minister further disclosed that, following discussions with the President, plans are underway to construct a new auditorium to accommodate the increasing number of law students.
“When challenges are channeled correctly to the appropriate authorities, no reasonable government will ignore them. Mr. President has continued to demonstrate his commitment to the education and justice sectors,” Wike stated.
He commended the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, for his proactive approach and partnership in driving reforms within the justice sector, including the ongoing digitization of FCT High Courts.
Wike also praised the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, for his dedication and developmental strides across all campuses of the institution, citing similar interventions in Yenagoa and Port Harcourt.
“I have never seen a luckier DG. The kind of infrastructural transformation he has championed in the Law School system is remarkable,” Wike noted, assuring that the contractors handling the hostel project must complete it within the stipulated 12 months period without any variation.
In his remarks, the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu, the Attorney-General, and the FCT Minister for their consistent support to the institution.
“Today’s flag-off is the fulfillment of the promise made in December 2024 to construct a hostel each for male and female students. This will go a long way in assisting the Nigerian Law School to fulfill its mandate,” Chiroma said.
He highlighted Wike’s past interventions in legal education, including the Graham Douglas Campus of the Law School in Port Harcourt, the Yenagoa Campus, and the provision of staff quarters and utility vehicles to various campuses.
“Your Excellency, you have continued to make history. Posterity will be kind to you when the story of legal education and the justice sector is written in Nigeria,” he added.
The event, attended by top officials of the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Council of Legal Education, and management staff of the Nigerian Law School, marked yet another milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of legal education infrastructure in the country.
